U.S. Amplifies Support for Cambodia’s Mission to Become Landmine-Free

Phnom Penh, April 8, 2024: In a significant move towards achieving a landmine-free Cambodia, the United States has announced an increase in its financial support for the Kingdom's mine clearance efforts in 2024. This pledge was made by Political Chief Andrew Leyva during the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, an event organized by the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) in Siem Reap province.

The U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh revealed that, in line with Cambodia's ongoing Chairmanship of the Mine Ban Treaty, the U.S. is set to bolster its support with a contribution of $12 million for the year 2024. This commitment underscores the U.S.'s role as one of Cambodia’s primary demining allies, working closely with international mine clearance non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and building on the longstanding cooperation with the Cambodia Mine Action Centre (CMAC) clearance teams.

Andrew Leyva expressed pride in the United States' partnership with Cambodia, highlighting the extensive efforts and successful collaborations across the country aimed at clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance. This increased financial support from the U.S. is a testament to both nations' dedication to removing the threat of landmines, furthering Cambodia's progress towards becoming landmine-free.
